Grandparents Orosil Arispe, 81, and Sonia Arispe, 75, were pulled from the burning home.

Paramedics attempted to revive the pair but they died at the scene.

The fire has been successfully extinguished and investigations into what caused it have begun.

Two male neighbours who spotted the smoke tried to force entry into the home before Fire & Rescue NSW arrived at the scene.

But NSW Police acting superintendent Dean Johnstone confirmed “their attempts were in vain”.

“One (neighbour) has smoke inhalation and has been taken to hospital,” Fire and Rescue NSW deputy commissioner Megan Stiffler said.

The pair were found collapsed on the ground floor of the residence.

Stiffler said evidence indicates “that they were trying to make an exit”.

Orosil and Sonia had lived for decades in the Wetherill Park home which was locked up tight at the time of the blaze so that Orosil, who lived with dementia, did not wander off, 7NEWS understands.

Stiffler said the secure household also made it difficult for first responders to get inside — prompting a plea to the public.

“If you’ve got older family members — please, sit down, have the discussion, talk about where their safety escape plan is,” Stiffler said.

Investigators told 7NEWS that Orosil and Sonia’s smoke alarms did not appear to be working.

“(This is) a really tragic reminder about how dangerous our homes can be during the winter fire season,” Stiffler said.

The blaze is the sixth fatal house fire in the state this winter.

Anyone who may have been in the area or who has information relating to the fire is urged to contact police.
