Dia Mirza recently opened up about her equation with step-daughter Samaira and the joyous moments of motherhood with her son Avyaan.
In her interview with News18, Dia expressed that there were no expectations from Samaira to call her ‘maa,’ ‘mumma,’ or ‘mother,’ as she has a loving mother whom she calls ‘mumma’ or ‘mom.’ Instead, Samaira affectionately calls Dia by her name, ‘Dia.’ Reflecting on the influence of Samaira on Avyaan, Dia shared a humorous anecdote, saying, “Thanks to her, now Avyaan also calls me ‘Dia’ once in a while. He says ‘Dia mom,’ it’s too funny.”
Dia’s marriage to Vaibhav Rekhi in 2021 brought her closer to Samaira, who is Vaibhav’s daughter with his ex-wife Sunaina Rekhi. Despite not having a traditional mother-daughter label, Dia and Samaira share a special bond filled with love and understanding.

During the conversation, Dia fondly recalled the moment when Avyaan uttered “mumma” for the first time. She described the magical experience, saying, “Oh my god, I will never forget that day. He said ‘mumma’ much later. I think it was a good three months after he started to say words. It was a beautiful moment because all the flowers had started to bloom in the balcony and there were lots of butterflies visiting the flowers, and he was in my arms.”

Dia recounted the moment as they admired butterflies in their balcony and concluded saying, “He suddenly looked at me and said, ‘Mumma’, I was like ‘Oh my god! What just happened.’ Interestingly, my husband had his camera and he was recording me showing Avyaan the butterflies so we have the whole moment on cameras. It was magical.”
