Dodgers roster: Nick Ramirez called up as extra arm for doubleheader

After Monday’s rain postponement, the Dodgers and Mets are each allowed to add one player as the 27th man on the active roster for Tuesday’s doubleheader. The Dodgers called up left-hander Nick Ramirez as the extra player on Tuesday, adding and extra arm to the bullpen for a day.

Under normal circumstances, because Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A on May 17, he could not have been recalled before his 15 days in the minors were up, on Saturday, unless replacing someone going on the injured list. But the 27th-man rule allows for a special exemption, and also does not count his getting sent back to the minors as using another option.

Ramirez has been up with the Dodgers for three stints this season after getting acquired from the Yankees for cash considerations on April 2. The veteran left-hander has a 3.86 ERA and 4.10 FIP in 9⅓ innings over six appearances, with five walks and three strikeouts.

In his last stint with the Dodgers, Ramirez was up for only one day, pitching the final 2⅓ innings of a loss to the Reds on May 16, then was optioned the next day for another fresh arm in a taxed bullpen.

“Everybody on the pitching side knows how valuable those seven outs were that day. It goes a long way throughout the 162 games when those outs mean so much,” left-hander Alex Vesia said last week. “We will see Nick again soon, 100 percent.”

In Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, Ramirez has a 1.17 ERA in seven appearances, with 11 strikeouts and one walk in 7⅔ innings. He last pitched last Wednesday, tossing a perfect inning against Reno.
