SAN JOSE — A driver was killed in a wrong-way collision Friday on Highway 101 in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle crash happened around 11:15 a.m. north of Blossom Hill Road, the CHP said in a news release.
The driver of a Honda sedan entered the southbound lanes of Highway 101 from Blossom Hill Road and traveled northbound in the wrong direction, according to the CHP.
At one point, the Honda collided head-on with a big rig traveling southbound, the CHP said.
The driver of the Honda was ejected from the sedan and landed in the center divide, where he was pronounced dead roughly 15 minutes later, according to the CHP.
The CHP identified the driver as a 22-year-old San Jose man. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release his full identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.
Diesel fuel spilled from the damaged big rig and flowed into the center divide, the CHP said. San Jose firefighters and California Department of Transportation workers stopped the spill from spreading.
The two left lanes of southbound Highway 101 were expected to remain closed during the afternoon commute for an investigation and clean-up, according to the CHP.
