Article content Article content Tuesday night RATING: *** (three out of four) It’s amazing what a pair of silver pants can do. Especially when Simon Le Bon, the lead singer of enduring‘80s act Duran Duran, is wearing them. The still boyish frontman — now 64 years old and in great voice — of the British New Romantics band put on a fun fashion display on Tuesday night at Scotiabank Arena as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees (who still include keyboardist Nick Rhodes, and two Taylors — John on bass and Roger on drums) thrilled a packed house for the most part. It was an hour and 50 minutes of 40-plus years of hits and even a new song, Danse Macabre, from their coming album of the same name, out Oct. 27. “Hello Canada!” said a very chatty Le Bon, who recalled having an apartment in High Park in Toronto early in the band’s career. Article content After opening with early song Night Boat, from their 1981 self-titled debut album, the group moved into major chart toppers like Wild Boys, Hungry Like The Wolf, View to a Kill, and Notorious before a slight lull in the show’s middle that started with Lonely in Your Nightmare. Article content Still, four songs later, the show wasted no time picking right back up with the gorgeous ballads Ordinary World, which Le Bon dedicated to the people of Ukraine, and Come Undone, the latter which he performed with Kiesza, the Canadian singer known for her hit song Hideaway before her career and life was derailed by a horrific car accident in Toronto in 2017. Article content Other crowd pleasers lifted the show to a compelling end like Planet Earth, a cover of White Lines, The Reflex, Girls on Film and the encore numbers Save a Prayer — with Le Bon asking everyone to turn on their cellphone lights — and Rio. Article content Opening for Duran Duran were British band Bastille and Nile Rodgers with Chic, the latter who put on a master class in disco and killer female vocals with such Chic hits as ‘Le Freak,’ ‘Everybody Dance,’ ‘Dance, Dance, Dance,’ ‘I Want Your Love,’ and ‘Good Times.’ There was also a roundup of Rodgers’ collaborations with other artists including Diana Ross’ I’m Coming Out and Upside Down, Madonna’s Like a Virgin and Material Girl, David Bowie’s Modern Love and Let’s Dance, and Daft Punk’s Get Lucky. And since it was Rodgers’ 71st birthday on Tuesday night, the audience sang happy birthday to him in a perfect end note to the set.
