Home Health: Eye Flu Cases on the Rise in Delhi – Duration and Treatment
The humid and damp conditions of the monsoon season in Delhi have created an ideal breeding ground for the viruses and bacteria responsible for eye flu infections to rapidly spread, according to experts. Cases of conjunctivitis and other eye infections are increasing in Delhi, with doctors warning that it is highly contagious and proper hygiene measures should be followed to prevent its spread. Both government and private hospitals have reported an influx of cases mainly among the younger population in the city. Eye flu is a self-limiting infection, with individual immunity playing a role in the duration of the disease. To prevent infection spread, it is advised to avoid touching the eyes and coming into contact with others. School children should be isolated for 3-5 days if infected, and if treatment is initiated, they can no longer be contagious.
The duration of eye flu typically lasts from a few days to two weeks. There are two types of pink eye – one caused by viruses such as herpes or adenovirus, which can last for 10-14 days and even up to a month in severe cases, and the other caused by bacteria, which lasts around 10 days. Viral pink eye can be transmitted from the nose to the eyes or through contact with droplets from someone coughing or sneezing. Bacterial pink eye is spread from the respiratory system or skin.
Treatment for eye flu involves the use of antibiotic eye drops, eye ointments, topical decongestants, lubricants, and sometimes oral anti-allergic medications. Cold compression with ice packs can also help with the symptoms. It is worth noting that cases of conjunctivitis and skin allergies have been primarily reported in relief camps housing flood-affected people in parts of Delhi.
