A dwarf actor has expressed his criticism towards the decision to cast Hugh Grant as a diminutive Oompa-Loompa in the upcoming musical “Wonka.” In previous Willy Wonka movies, actors with dwarfism portrayed these characters. George Coppen believes that this tradition should have been continued for the new film, which focuses on the candy maker’s earliest days and stars Timothée Chalamet. Coppen told the BBC that many actors with dwarfism feel like they are being marginalized in the industry they love. He argues that individuals with dwarfism should be offered roles in dramas and soaps, but they are not being given these opportunities. Coppen is also dissatisfied with the digital adjustments made to Grant to make him resemble someone with dwarfism, stating that his head was enlarged, which he finds unacceptable. Grant’s portrayal is only briefly seen in the “Wonka” trailer, where he is trapped in a glass jar, and Chalamet’s character confronts him. Warner Brothers has not responded to Coppen’s comments. “Wonka” is directed by Paul King, who previously explained that he cast Grant based on the character’s sarcastic and judgmental nature, which aligns well with Grant’s comedic abilities. The film also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Matt Lucas, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, and Olivia Colman, and is set to release on December 15.
