After skipping out on F9 — the latest instalment of the Fast & Furious franchise — the action star announced he won’t be back for the final two films.

His comments come after series star Vin Diesel opened up on the tension the two leading men had on the set of 2017’s The Fate of the Furious. The pair had a falling out while shooting the action sequel and Johnson shifted his Fast character Luke Hobbs in his own spinoff alongside Jason Statham in 2019’s Hobbs & Shaw.

“It was a tough character to embody, the Hobbs character. My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be,” Diesel, 53, said in a recent interview with Men’s Health. “That took a lot of work. We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything I’d have to do in order to get performances in anything I’m producing.”

When asked about Diesel’s comments in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson, 49, said he “laughed hard.”

“I think everyone had a laugh at that. And I’ll leave it at that,” he added. “I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me.”

Johnson’s Jungle Cruise co-star Emily Blunt chimed in, “Just thank God he was there. Thank God. He carried you through that.”

“Felliniesque,” Johnson added, taking a dig at Diesel.

While filming Fate of the Furious in 2016, Johnson referred to several unnamed co-stars as “candy asses” in an Instagram rant.

“Some conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don’t,” he wrote. “The ones that don’t are too chicken s— to do anything about it anyway … When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I’m not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling — you’re right.”

According to TMZ, Johnson was left fuming after Diesel reportedly showed up to the set late and berated some of his fellow actors. The New York Post quoted a source as saying Johnson “thinks Vin’s disrespectful — and he is.”

One celebrity publicist close to the films told the Post, “Vin is always a douche” on set, and “Dwayne is always a doll.”

But in a 2017 interview with USA Today, Diesel claimed his behaviour was all about making the best movie possible.

“I protect the franchise. I protect everybody including Dwayne. I protected Dwayne more than he’ll ever know. And it doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have to know. But he appreciates it. He knows it,” Diesel said. “Dwayne has only got one Vin in his life. Dwayne Johnson only has one big brother in this film world and that’s me.”
