Earth Potentially Facing Impacts

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a warning about a “cannibal” coronal mass ejection (CME) heading towards Earth. This CME could cause a strong solar storm today. On August 5, an X1.6-class solar flare released two powerful CMEs from the Sun. These two CME clouds have now merged into a single, more powerful entity. Even a glancing blow from this cloud can spark a vicious solar storm. The storm is predicted to hit Earth on August 8 and can produce G3-class storms. Coronal mass ejections are large, fast-moving clouds of magnetized plasma and solar radiation that can cause geomagnetic storms if they collide with Earth. A cannibal CME is created when a second CME catches up with and engulfs an initial CME. This creates a single, massive wave of plasma. Researchers are closely monitoring the situation to determine if it will be a direct collision or a glancing blow. The NOAA warns that a direct strike from a CME can damage satellites, impact mobile networks, GPS, and even power grids. Even after the solar storm passes, things will not be quiet for Earth, as an X1-class solar flare erupted on August 7. It is uncertain if the CME released during the flare eruption will strike Earth, but it did cause a shortwave radio blackout. The NOAA is a scientific and regulatory agency within the United States Department of Commerce. Its responsibilities include weather forecasting, monitoring oceanic and atmospheric conditions, charting the seas, conducting deep-sea exploration, managing fishing, and protecting marine life in the U.S. exclusive economic zone.
