The Charleston, South Carolina native advanced to the third round for the third consecutive grand slam.
After making it no further than the second round at a grand slam in 2023 (French Open), Navarro, 23, made it to the third round at the Australian Open in January and the fourth round at Roland Garros in June.
Per IBM Slamtrack match data, Navarro dominated on first serve, winning 27 of her 33 points (82 percent).
In the second set, Navarro was 15-of-26 (58 percent) in receiving points, comfortably handling Osaka’s first and second serves.
She’s one of several ranked American women remaining in the Wimbledon field. No. 2 seed Coco Gauff leads the list, followed by No. 5 Jessica Pegula, No. 11 Danielle Collins and No. 12 Madison Keys.
Americans Robin Montgomery, Bernarda Pera and Katie Volynets advanced to the second round after entering the tournament unseeded.
Next, Navarro plays Diana Shnaider. Per Tennis Abstract, this will be their third meeting, with all taking place since May 13.
Shnaider is 2-0, winning the Paris 125 Final on clay, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and in the semis at Bad Homburg, a grass court tune-up to Wimbledon, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.
Both matches lasted over two hours, so Navarro is probably thrilled that she took care of Osaka in less than an hour.
