A 35-square-mile area just west of Interstate 5’s Grapevine section is under an evacuation order because of a wildfire.
The Post Fire, which was reported shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday, was estimated at 14,625 acres (23 square miles) on Sunday evening, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. That makes it California’s biggest wildfire of the season so far, surpassing Corral, which burned 14,168 acres two weeks ago in San Joaquin County.
The evacuated area, in red on the map above, is west of the freeway, extending from Gorman to Pyramid Lake; it includes Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area. The black line indicates the approximate perimeter as of Sunday evening.
Though the fire had burned to up to I-5, the freeway remained open. Because of a high-wind advisory, travel on the Grapevine section was not recommended for trailers or campers, the California Transportation Department said on Sunday afternoon.
Los Angeles County’s I-5 corridor and the Ventura County mountains are under a red-flag warning, indicating heightened wildfire danger, until 5 p.m. Monday because of strong winds and low humidity, the National Weather Service said. Peak wind gusts of 55 mph were forecast for daylight hours Sunday, increasing to 70 mph overnight.
