Topline
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are returning for a sequel to their hit film “Freaky Friday” more than 20 years after the movie premiered, following fan demand and a push by both stars to get Disney to greenlight a sequel.
Key Facts
Lohan and Curtis will reprise their roles as mother-daughter duo Anna and Tess Coleman, who switched bodies in the 2003 film, with Lohan also serving as executive producer and Curtis producing the film.
The still-untitled film will be released in theaters in 2025, though the date has not yet been specified.
The “Freaky Friday” sequel picks up years after the 2003 film was set, with Lohan’s character now a mother and a soon-to-be stepmother, as “Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”
Chad Michael Murray, who plays Lohan’s love interest in the 2003 film, and Ryan Harmon, who plays her stepfather, will both reprise their roles in the sequel.
New cast members include “Never Have I Ever” star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, “The Good Place” star Manny Jacinto, and child actors Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons.
Canadian American director Nisha Ganatra, known for directing comedies like “Late Night” (2019) and “The High Note” (2020), will direct the sequel.
Key Background
The “Freaky Friday” sequel was announced last year following fan demand and a push by both Curtis and Lohan, who said they would return for a sequel and contacted Disney to pitch the film. Curtis said in October 2022 she would “absolutely” return for a sequel, and said she and Lohan were still in contact. Days later, Curtis appeared on “The View” and said she had already contacted Disney, joking: “Let me be the grandma! Let me be the old grandma who switches places… And simply, I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today.” Lohan said the following month she “would definitely love” to return for a sequel with Curtis. Curtis said she and Lohan were in talks with Disney in November 2022, and Disney confirmed a sequel was officially in the works in May 2023. The script was completed just before the writers’ strike began in May 2023, and Entertainment Tonight reported that a casting call for the film suggested Lohan and Curtis’ characters may swap bodies with two teenage girls, rather than with each other.
Big Number
More than $160 million. That’s how much “Freaky Friday” grossed worldwide from its 2003 theatrical run, according to Box Office Mojo.
Surprising Fact
The “Freaky Friday” sequel will be Lohan’s first starring role in a film to get a wide theatrical release in more than a decade, following her hiatus from acting. Since returning to film roles in 2022, she has starred in several romantic comedies for Netflix, including “Falling for Christmas” and “Irish Wish.” She also had a brief cameo in the 2024 film “Mean Girls,” a film adaptation of the Broadway musical inspired by the 2004 film which Lohan starred in. Lohan’s last major wide theatrical releases were “Scary Movie 5” in 2013, in which she played a fictionalized version of herself, and “Machete” in 2010.
Tangent
The upcoming sequel is the latest installment in the “Freaky Friday” franchise, which began with Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel. Her book was first adapted for film in 1976 starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster as a mother and daughter who switch bodies. The novel was adapted again for an ABC television film in 1995, before being adapted once again for Curtis and Lohan’s 2003 film. A “Freaky Friday” musical debuted in 2016, and a film based on the musical premiered on Disney Channel in 2018.
