Former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has opened up about his biggest regret as a professional footballer, involving his ex-teammate Sergio Aguero and Real Madrid star Angel di María.
In an interview with the ‘Charla Podcast’, the Brazilian left-back recounted a story from his time at Atletico, when he played against Real Madrid in a heated Madrid Derby.
Luis said that before the match, Aguero, who was then Atletico’s star striker, approached him with a tip to get in Angel di Maria’s head.
“I’m going to open my heart about the biggest regret of my career,” Luis said. “If there is something that I really regret having done, and I would like to go back in time and not do it again, it was against Ángel Di María.
“I arrived at Atlético de Madrid and we were going to play against Real Madrid. Kun Agüero told me: ‘Filipe, if you get close to him, he will get lost, he will leave the game. At the first opportunity, tell him about his wife.’ And I came to Di María and said something about his wife — I don’t know what. I cursed him, I pronounced the name of his wife… And there he looked at me, he was crestfallen, I won the whole game. And he really didn’t have a good performance.
“I came home and I regretted it so much. I said di María… a thousand apologies, friend, sorry for having done that to you,”
Real Madrid won that game back in 2010 2 – 0, so Luis is haunted double for his troubles that day.
As for Sergio Aguero, well:
Di Maria won La Decima and Real Madrid won 4 more UCL titles while Aguero won, *checks notes* zero — and now we have this video to watch forever.pic.twitter.com/YFJC1g8Q1k
