Snakes are one of the biggest fears for a lot of people around the world. And snakes that can fly, seem like their worst nightmare coming true. This is a reality in the jungles of Asia and Southeast Asia.
Can snakes fly?
A flying snake or Chrysopelea is a non venomous snake, in the family of Colubridae. These snakes are found in Asia and the Indonesian archipelago. There is limited knowledge about them but they are mainly arboreal, living atop a canopy. The smallest species grow up to 2 feet while the largest can be 4 feet long. Flying snake is an inaccurate name as these creatures don’t actually fly but through the motion of their bodies are able to glide up to 100 meters. They are able to fly by pulling up their ventral scale to shape their underside concave, like in a parachute.
How do snakes fly?
The exact way which helps the snakes to glide is not known to the scientists. It is assumed that they fly to escape their predators without having to descend from trees. They are only limbless vertebrates that are able to guide through air easily. This evolution in otherwise flightless creatures is said to happen due to the tall trees of tropical and subtropical trees.
The flying snakes depend on rodents, bats, frogs, birds and lizards for their diet. Due to their small fangs, they are almost non venomous hence making them harmless to the humans. But no one is denying the fact that a flying snake won’t terrify us.
Indian flying snake
The Indian flying snake is black and green with orange spots over its body. The color and pattern on their body seems striking when they are outside their element but in their natural habitat they merge in with colors of their habitat. They have sharp ridges all along their body that helps them climb trees swiftly and with ease. These snakes can lay up to 12 eggs at a time in trees or hollows of trees and animals. These snakes can be found in Western ghats, parts of Eastern ghats, and all of north east.
