Following Darwin’s Journey: Embarking on a Sailing Ship to Recreate the Beagle’s Round-the-World Voyage | Unforgettable Sailing Holidays

On Monday 14 August, an antique sailing ship, the Oosterschelde, will start its two-year voyage around the world from Plymouth’s historic Sutton harbour. The ship aims to retrace the route taken by another historic ship almost two centuries ago, the HMS Beagle, which Charles Darwin boarded on Boxing Day 1831. The voyage, part of the Darwin200 project, aims to inspire future environmental leaders and scientists. Adventurous individuals can also apply to be part of the crew for epic voyages between various destinations. The Oosterschelde will visit places such as Cape Verde, Rio, Auckland, and Tasmania, which Darwin reached during his journey. The project has already selected 50 young naturalists between the ages of 18 and 25 to study in one of the 32 ports along the way and report on specific species that Darwin identified. The project also includes a programme of free lectures, experiments, and activities that will be accessible through the Darwin200 website. The journey begins with celebrations in Plymouth this weekend, and the ship will have a crew of 24. Sign-ups are still open for individuals to join the crew on various legs of the voyage.
