Ford is going all out with its new sixth generation Mustang, delivering on its promise to offer a V8 option in a time when other competitors are eschewing V8 engines. The company has also developed the most powerful, naturally aspirated 5.0-liter Coyote engine to date, which is featured in the track-tuned 2024 Mustang Dark Horse. But Ford Performance has another surprise up its sleeve, along with a dedicated IMSA racing series: the Mustang Dark Horse R.

The Mustang Dark Horse R is the third racing-focused sixth-gen Mustang to join Ford Performance’s lineup, which already includes the GT3 and GT4 cars. Designed solely for customer track use, the Dark Horse R boasts a 5.0L Coyote V8 engine delivering over 500 horsepower. Power is channeled through a Tremec 3160 manual transmission and Torsen limited slip differential with a 3.73 final drive ratio. Ford has made various upgrades to the Dark Horse R to ensure it is ready for competition, including enhancements to the oil system, transmission and differential cooling, as well as the installation of a Borla racing exhaust system. Safety features comprise a new fuel cell, MoTeC data display and logging system, roll cage, Recaro FIA racing seat, Sparco-brand quick-release steering wheel, FIA racing harness, and fire suppression system.

The Dark Horse R will be available for competition in the upcoming Mustang Challenge series, sponsored by Michelin and managed by the Ford Performance Racing School. The series, consisting entirely of Mustangs, is set to debut in 2024 with five to six race weekends, each featuring two races. Ford Performance has reported significant interest from customers and intends to sell as many Dark Horse Rs as there are willing buyers.

For those unfamiliar with one-make series, IMSA already hosts similar competitions featuring Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mazda MX-5, and Porsche Carrera Cup. If the sound of 20-30+ one-make cars thrillingly passing by is music to your ears, imagine the experience of a full field of 5.0L Coyote V8s roaring past at the start of a race. It will be an absolute delight.
