Fotodiox has announced the DLX Parabolic Focusing Softbox, a new hybrid softbox/reflector that provides photographers extensive control over the direction and quality of their light.
The hybrid light modifier allows users to attach a light with a Bowens or other standard mount to either the front or back of the reflector using a front reverse mounting rod. By sliding the rod backward, photographers can narrow the beam angle of the reflected light or move the light forward to widen the throw. Markings on the rod include light angles, making it easy for photographers to dial in consistent settings across multiple shots.
By removing the Bowens (or other brand) mount from the reverse mounting rod, users reveal a light stand stud, which is ideal for mounting yoked constant light sources to the reflect, per Fotodiox.
To use the DLX Parabolic Focusing Softbox as a traditional softbox, photographers remove the reverse mounting rod and attach an included Bowens mount to the back of the modifier. Two diffusion panels can be added to the parabolic softbox to soften the light further.
The product includes a silver interior lining to deliver “bright, neutral light,” and it has a black backing to direct and focus light. Further, the reverse mounting rod includes a place to place a counterbalance bag.
“Built with high-quality materials and fabrics, DLX Parabolic Focusing Softbox is designed for heavy-duty use during long studio hours in mind. DLX softboxes feature a quick collapsible structure with heavy-duty rod support. Setup takes only seconds; just hold the speedring and pull the rods up to pop them in place and done! Tearing down is a breeze too; just remove the light from the softbox and pull up slightly on the rods while pressing the quick-release tabs on the speedring and the softbox collapses with ease. The diffusion panels can even be left in place during tear down and storage, so your softbox is always ready to use,” says Fotodiox.
The Fotodiox DLX Parabolic Focusing Softbox is available in three sizes: 48 inches, 56 inches, and 72 inches. However, the company recommends that due to the weight of the 72-inch version, it should only be used as a parabolic reflector rather than a traditional softbox.
Prices start at $400 for the 48-inch size, increasing to $500 and $700 for the 56-inch and 72-inch versions, respectively. The product is available in Bowens, Balcar, Elinchrom, and Profoto speedring variants. Complete details and purchasing options are available on Fotodiox’s website.
