Gareth Southgate has an impressive CV with England as a manager despite the fact he hasn’t won any silverware with the Three Lions.
New Delhi: England head coach Gareth Southgate has informed that he will leave the job at Three Lions if they fail win the trophy at EURO 2024 which starts later this week. Notably, Southgate is also reportedly in talks with the Manchester United hierarchy to replace Erin Ten Hag at Old Trafford. England, who were runners-up in the previous edition, start their EURO 2024 campaign against Serbia in their tournament opener on June 16.
Despite not winning a single trophy as a manager with England, Southgate has a pretty impressive stint with the national side so far. He succeeded Sam Allardyce in 2016, and led the side to the semifinal of 2018 FIFA World Cup, 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal and EURO 2020 final. With the kind of players Southgate has at his disposal currently, England can dream of winning a silverware this time.
“If we don’t win, I probably won’t be here anymore,” Southgate was quoted as saying to German publication Bild. “Then it might be the last chance. I think about half of the national coaches leave after a tournament – that’s the nature of international football.
“I’ve been here for almost eight years now and we’ve come close. So, I know that you can’t keep standing in front of the public and saying ‘please do a little more’, because at some point people will lose faith in your message. If we want to be a big team and I want to be a top coach, then you have to deliver in the big moments,” added the 53-year-old.
While everyone is busy with EURO 2024, Southgate is believed to be doing the rounds in the Manchester United camp. Dan Ashworth, who is to be appointed as Manchester United Sporting Director, has worked with Southgate at the Football Association, and is a fan of him. The former England international’s contract with the FA expires at the end of the year and hasn’t signed an extension.
It is also reported that the Manchester United management is set to decide on Ten Hag’s future next week after the Dutchman is believed to have returned from his holiday recently.
