Geelong have requested next weekend’s blockbuster clash against Richmond to be moved from the MCG to GMHBA Stadium in the wake of Victoria’s COVID-19 outbreak.

The Cats were scheduled to face Richmond at the MCG next Sunday at 1:45pm AEST, but have entered a request with the AFL for the clash to be moved to Geelong due to the likelihood that crowds will not be allowed to attend, per AFL.com.au.

Three scheduled Melbourne matches were moved to Queensland this weekend as the AFL joined other sporting codes in hastily shifting its fixtures for the weekend.

Geelong flew back to Melbourne on Friday afternoon after facing Fremantle in Perth and Richmond is also expected to return to Victoria after facing the Brisbane Lions in the Gold Coast.

Despite Melbourne’s COVID-19 numbers surging once again, three matches will be played between both the MCG and Marvel Stadium, albeit with no crowds in attendance.

If the Round 19 Cats-Tigers clash is moved from the MCG to GMHBA Stadium, it’ll be the Tigers’ first match in Geelong since Round 21, 2017.

Geelong has long requested for its home finals to be played at GMHBA Stadium as opposed to the MCG, with senior coach Chris Scott particularly vocal in the past.

The Cats have been scheduled to play nine of its 11 home matches in Geelong this season.
