Gmail: Five AI-based Gmail features that can help you get things done faster

This year, Google has added several new AI-based features to Gmail in order to improve overall user experience and also to make things easier for them. This includes the new “Help me write” feature along with new improved inbox management and more. Here are five AI features in Gmail that can come in handy.
Help me write
Help me write is the most recent AI-based feature that Google has added to Gmail. The feature aims at making it easier for users to draft an email using simple prompts. It is not limited to the Google Workspace Labs program, however, you can simply head to labs.google.com and sign up for it to get access.
Once you have access, there will be a new Help me write button (star with a pencil) in the Compose section of Gmail. To use the feature, click on the icon, enter the prompt explaining what you’d want to write in the email and then hit the Create button.
It also lets users refine the results with the included Refine button along with the options like making the tone more formal, more elaborate or shorter.
The feature uses the company’s generative AI large language models to interpret the prompt and create the result.
Smart Compose
Smart Compose offers a valuable solution for those who don’t want to start their email drafts from scratch but still seek some helpful suggestions during the writing process.
This functionality is based on a hybrid language generation model, powered by Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), to provide suggestions for phrasing. With a simple tap of the “Tab” button, users can effortlessly accept these suggestions and incorporate them into the email draft without the need to type them out entirely.
Moreover, Smart Compose not only aims to enhance writing efficiency but also provides an added benefit for certain users.
Smart Reply
Smart Reply enables automated quick reply suggestions based on AI and the email context. Quick replies have always been there, howevr, with the help of AI, each email can have different quick replies. This feature can generate up to three possible responses to emails you receive. With two clicks or taps, you can select and send your response.
Smart Reply uses advanced machine learning technology like deep neural networks.
Tabbed Inbox
Inboxes can get cluttered very easily and managing them, after a while, starts appearing like an impossible task. This is where the new Tabbed Inbox feature will come in handy. Gmail tabs rely on a classification system that uses machine learning to decide where an email should go based on different signals, like who sent the email. The messages then get segregated into one of five different inbox tabs — Primary, Promotions, Social, Updates and Forums — automatically.
This not only lets users access the right email without scrolling through the long list, but also keeps them clutter-free and well organised.
Nudging
Nudging is another Gmail AI feature that tackles the universal problem of email procrastination. For many, forgetting to respond to emails is all too common. Nudging helps combat this by automatically recognising messages that require replies and gently reminding users to follow up. This tool works for both incoming and outgoing emails.
