Gold Coast father Shane Savage dies after spectacular crash at Powercruise event at Willowbank

A driver who was thrown from his vehicle at an amateur car racing meet in Queensland has died four days after the crash.

Shane Savage, 41, was competing in the Powercruise event at Queensland Raceway at Willowbank, Ipswich, on Friday night when his car rolled.

The force of the high-speed crash threw both Savage and his passenger from the car.

Savage, a father of young children and towing business owner on the Gold Coast, was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital with critical head, chest and pelvic injuries.

Police revealed on Tuesday morning he had died from his injuries.

In footage posted to social media, a man can be heard exclaiming, “He fell out of the car, bro”, in the immediate aftermath of the crash.

It’s unclear if the remark refers to Savage or his passenger, who suffered serious injuries.

Savage’s partner, Tara Lee Murphy, posted on Facebook on Monday to express gratitude for “everyone’s messages even though I can’t reply to you all right now.

“Everyone is so supportive, asking if I need help … We have a long road ahead no matter the outcome,” she said.

Powercruise events allow car enthusiasts to participate in amateur races, perform burnouts and skids, and drift, among other activities.

“Powercruise events allow you to do all the things you’re not allowed to do on the streets,” the company’s website says.

It has been reported Savage was driving a Holden Torana when he crashed.
