Gunpowder Milkshake is a straightforward film, but by the time the movie ends, there are still many unanswered questions.
Gunpowder Milkshake seems to be a pretty straightforward film with Sam (Karen Gillan) botching a couple jobs for the Firm and having to go on the run. However, her journey starts weaving intricate webs as she picks up a young girl, Emily (Chloe Coleman), to protect and has faces from her past coming back to help out. As a result, by the time the movie ends, there are some unanswered questions due to this expanded cast.
Why Did Sam’s Dad Die?
Gunpowder Milkshake starts off with Scarlet leaving Sam behind at the Diner after engaging in a fight. 15 years later, Scarlet admits she fled after killing a Russian who murdered Sam’s dad years before. But Scarlet never explains why Sam’s dad was killed. All she says is the Russians worked with the Firm, so it begs the question of whether Sam’s dad did too and this was business gone bad.
What Happened on Sam’s First Job?
Sam had to kill about “four or five idiots” for the Firm, but it ended up being a lot more. This resulted in her killing the McAlester kid and the gang then wanting retribution. However, Sam never finds out why the intel was bad and the audience never learns what led her to murder dozens of people.
Did Sam’s Mom Work for the Firm?
Scarlet trained with the Librarians after her husband passed, as Anna May (Angela Bassett) and the others took her in. Anna May knew Sam’s dad and dealt him weapons, so she helped Scarlet, who had nothing but a daughter to raise. But it’s not entirely clear if Scarlet did work for the Firm at some point. Nathan (HR for the Firm) did let her go in peace despite killing Russian allies, hinting that she did.
What Happened with Sam and the Librarians?
Sam’s a teenager when Scarlet leaves her, and Gunpowder Milkshake cuts to her then doing work for Nathan as an adult. It’s never revealed what happened in between and why she didn’t visit the Librarians, whom she considered aunts. The fact that they don’t immediately recognize her when she revisits to get guns is odd. Either they had a falling out or both parties have terrible memories.
Why Did Scarlet Remain in Hiding?
Sam’s given intel by Nathan sending her to go to a hotel. There, she meets Scarlet, who admits she stayed in town and kept close watch. But it’s never explained why she remained in hiding. Sam got older so as Scarlet monitored her jobs, she could have contacted Sam to make an alliance. Also, Scarlet could have used Sam to link up with the Librarians for protection from the Firm.
Why Did Nathan Sell Out Scarlet?
Ultimately, Nathan sends gangsters to the hotel to take out Sam, Emily and Scarlet. He seemed to be cool with Scarlet, so why did he decide to turn on her? It’s understandable why he got Sam marked for botching jobs, but Scarlet appeared to be off the books. The fact that he kept her secret says it all, as he could have turned on her way before.
Why Did Nathan Employ Sam?
It’s never confirmed why Nathan employed Sam in the wake of Scarlet’s disappearance. The Firm shouldn’t be working with the daughter of their enemy, yet they are. And while he has known her a long time, it’s also unknown why Nathan cares for Sam so much and tries to help her out until she gives him no choice.
How Did McAlester’s Men Find the Library?
Sam, Scarlet and Emily eventually flee the hotel to get to the Librarians, but the gangsters show up there. Gunpowder Milkshake never reveals how they tracked them there, as not even Nathan could’ve known they’d be visiting old friends.
How Did Madeleine Lose the Fight?
The Librarians bear arms selectively, but it’s odd because most of the time, they use chains, hammers and medieval weapons. One would think they’d at least keep a sidearm on them all the time since they’re dealers. It leads to Madeleine brawling with a thug after she got shot, which culminates in her being left bleeding out. Yet viewers never find out exactly how she lost this fight.
How Was the Diner Compromised?
The Diner is neutral ground where blood can’t be spilled, evidenced by head waitress, Rose, making orders known throughout the duration of Gunpowder Milkshake. Yet the finale has Scarlet and the Librarians infiltrating, dressed as waitresses to kill off McAlester and his crew, saving Sam and Emily. It’s never specified if Rose did this willingly or if the Librarians forced their way in.
Gunpowder Milkshake is currently streaming on Netflix and will play in theaters internationally this summer. A sequel is now in development.
