A good skincare routine has many benefits for those with a mature complexion, and when combined with a healthy diet, exercise, and plenty of sleep, is a surefire way to look younger.
When it comes to hair, however, the power of a good style is often overlooked, with most women focusing solely on how grey they are.
But according to a hair expert, styling has a surprisingly powerful impact on how one looks. And it doesn’t have to cost the earth either.
Ghanima Abdullah, stylist and beauty consultant at The Right Hairstyles, suggested that a more youthful appearance is easy to cheat simply by avoiding certain hairdos.
She shared the common mistakes that can add “10 or 15 years” onto a face.
1. Not up-keeping long hair
Grey or not, shorter hairstyles are much more flattering on the face when it comes to looking younger. Long hair can look flat and plagued with split ends when neglected, resulting in frizziness and a lacklustre look.
Hair expert Ghanima Abdullah suggested: “If your hair is thinning, try to keep the length between shoulder and ear length.” She claimed that doing so would make hair appear “fuller and more youthful”, warning that when hair is “too long”, it “looks even more thin, which can age you considerably”.
2. Not taming frizz
As women get older, estrogen levels naturally decrease and “hair can become more fine” which makes it more “prone to frizz”, Ghanima said. To tackle the problem without losing volume or body in ageing hair, it’s important to choose lightweight products.
The hair expert suggested trying a “leave-in conditioner” to “coat hair strands” and leave them looking silky smooth without weighing down the lengths. Additionally, she says that a “few drops of jojoba oil after blow drying can do the same trick”.
