The celebrations for this festival typically start an evening before Holi by lighting of bonfires, which is called Holika Dahan or Choti Holi. For this, people get together around these fires and sing and dance to folk songs. According to Hindu mythology, a young boy named Prahlad was a huge devotee of Lord Vishnu, which his father– the demon King Hiranyakashipu did not approve of. This made Hiranyakashipu plot Prahlad, with the help of his sister Holika- who had a boon of not getting burned. So Holika sat in bonfire along with young Prahlad– however, Prahlad’s devotion to Lord Vishnu saved him, while Holika burned in the fire. And thus, Holi is a celebration of good winning over evil.
On the day of Holi, people get together to play with bright colour powders and water. This is a joyful celebration of colours and togetherness. The festival breaks down social barriers and also brings people together irrespective of their caste, creed, or status. This is also a time when old grievances are forgotten, and friendships are renewed amidst fun and laughter.
