The announcement of the renewal of the historical drama, comes just a month after the web series premiered on Netflix on May 1. Bhansali, who made his series debut with “Heeramandi”, expressed gratitude for the show’s success. “I’m blessed by the love and appreciation for ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’.It’s been a joy to see the show resonate with audiences worldwide, and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner than Netflix. I’m happy to announce that we’ll be back with season 2,” the filmmaker said in a statement.
The official Instagram page of Netflix India shared a video of a flash mob of 100 dancers at Mumbai’s Carter Road dressed dancing to a medley of songs such as “Sakal Ban” and “Tilasmi Baahein” from the series. “Mehfil phir se jamegi, Heeramandi: Season 2 jo aayega,” read the captioned.

Shortly after news broke, cast members, fans and fellow netizens took to the comments sections and to their social media handles to share their excitement about the show’s renewal. Aditi Rao Hydari, who played a leading role in Season 1 wrote, “Whoa!!!!! This is amazing!”
Taha Shah, who was the male lead in the series also shared his excitement about the big news, saying, “Dang!”
Meanwhile, Sanjeeda Shaikh celebrated the news by simply ssaying, “Mashallahhhh!”
While fans shared their excitement to watch the next chapter in the Bhansali production, there were those who had a rather bitter-sweet reaction to the news. “Heeramandi without Tajdar, Bibojaan, Lajjo????” a fan asked with crying emoticons, referring to the deaths of the characters played by Taha, Aditi and Richa Chadha.
“When you’re feeling excited for Heeramandi season 2 But then you realise there will be no Bibbojaan in season 2,” said another.
Echoing similar sentiments, another said, “Looking forward to S2!!! Though I’m hoping that S2 will be a prequel since most of my favourite characters have died.”
Check out some of the other X reactions:
The second season will not be a prequel, but will continue the stories of the ladies of Heeramandi who reportedly leave Lahore and seek employment in the Mumbai film industry and the Kolkata film industry. Speaking to Variety, Bhansali opened up about the plot saying, “They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs.”
Bhansali had previously said the decision to greenlight ‘Heeramandi Season 2’ rested with Netflix.
‘Heeramandi’ was praised for its drama, lavish sets, and intricately crafted characters. However, a section of viewers has called out the series for romanticising brothels, taking creative liberties with historical events and pointing out other linguistic inaccuracies.
The first season of the series starred Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Richa Chadha, and Sharmin Segal. It also starred Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah Badussha, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman, Farida Jalal, and Indresh Malik. Besides the character deaths, it is still unclear which actors will return for the second chapter and if the show will now include a fresh batch of talents.
Rumours are rife the the series will hit screens in 2026, after the director has wrapped up work on his film ‘Love and War’ starring Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal and Ranbir Kapoor.
