Crews have completed the task of clearing the Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park, which was buried under a massive amount of snow. However, the road cannot be opened to the public yet due to significant damage discovered in the surrounding facilities. Around 60% of the buildings in the Tuolumne Meadows area have been damaged, with roofs collapsing in employee housing and other facilities like the lodge, gift shop, and post office being impacted. There is also a need to clear boulders and trees that are at risk of falling along certain parts of the road. Additionally, a section of the road near Olmstead Point has crumbled. Park officials are working to open the road to the public by the end of July but do not have an exact date. The wastewater treatment system in the Tuolumne Meadows area is also damaged, causing officials to make arrangements for portable toilets and road construction contractors. The closure of the road has caused traffic congestion in Yosemite Valley, and the damage assessment for the facilities in the high country is still ongoing. The company operating in the park is uncertain about which buildings can be opened to visitors, as some require minor repairs while others need complete replacements. The employee housing has also been significantly affected, limiting the services that can be provided during the summer season. Meanwhile, a small fire called the Pika Fire has been burning in the park, but it does not pose a threat to structures or individuals and is being allowed to burn naturally.
