The slip-out began in the southbound lane, but in a tweet Caltrans officials said the northbound lane could also be affected, and both lanes were closed early Saturday evening.
“This slip-out has closed the highway between Palo Colorado to just south of the Rocky Creek Bridge,” the agency said.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office added some detail Saturday evening, saying “the southbound lanes have been lost and northbound lanes impacted,” in a statement released on Twitter. “Caltrans engineers will assess conditions this tomorrow morning. The closure extends south to Limeklin. There is no estimate for opening.”
Other closures, about 40 miles south on Highway 1 near Limekiln State Park, have been in place for months, disrupting traffic on the famous scenic roadway.
An account sharing information for the County of Monterey said on Saturday night that any tourists who might be stranded because of the road closure could go to the Big Sur Lodge. The lodge “has opened a conference room for those in need to have a safe place to get inside and stay warm.”
