House Democrat Introduces Resolution to Censure Marjorie Taylor Greene

First-term Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.) is spearheading a resolution to censure Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) over her controversial comments and actions. Recently, Greene made headlines for displaying censored sexual images of President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, during a hearing last week.

The resolution introduced on Tuesday encompasses around 40 points of grievance against Greene, citing specific comments and the dates on which they were made.

In addition to Greene displaying Hunter Biden’s images, the resolution takes issue with her visit to inmates involved in the January 6th incident, referring to them as the “patriot wing.” It also criticizes Greene for calling Muslim members of Congress part of the “Jihad Squad” and attending a white nationalist event, although she later condemned its leader, claiming she was unaware of its association with white nationalism. Furthermore, the resolution highlights Greene’s comparison of COVID-19 vaccinations to Nazis forcing Jewish people to wear a star, among other grievances.

Becca Balint stated, “For me, censuring Rep. Taylor Greene is about the health of our democracy and faith in government. Her antisemitic, racist, transphobic rhetoric has no place in the House of Representatives.”

The resolution was introduced as privileged, allowing Balint to potentially force floor action on the measure in the future. However, there are no immediate plans for such action.

Greene dismissed the resolution soon after its introduction, stating that she was unfamiliar with the freshman Democrat and claiming that it was a fundraising stunt. She added, “I could care less.”

Although Democrats have previously reprimanded Greene, she has not been officially censured by the House. In 2021, when Democrats held the majority, Greene was stripped of her committee assignments as a consequence for her conspiracy theory posts and liking a Facebook comment that advocated for the assassination of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Last week, Democrats introduced a privileged resolution to censure Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), who is facing financial crime charges. Additionally, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) forced a vote on her resolution to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (R-Calif.) over his involvement in investigating former President Donald Trump.
