A pregnant woman has tested positive for zika virus in Pune. This is the second such case and sixth overall case of virus spreading in the city. “A 28-year-old pregnant woman from the Erandwane area was detected with Zika virus infection. Her reports came positive on Friday. Another woman, who is 12 weeks pregnant, was detected with the infection on Monday, as per PTI reports. Zika virus is a mosquito-borne disease that spreads due to the bite by Aedes mosquito that usually bite in the day. Pregnancy is a sensitive time where the mother and the child require extra care and precaution for everything. It is essential for moms-to-be to take care of themselves from such infections as it may lead to complications.

Zika Virus and Pregnancy

Zika virus in pregnant women may cause microcephaly (condition in which the head is significantly smaller due to abnormal brain development) in the foetus.The Zika virus disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which is also known to transmit infections like dengue and chikungunya. The virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947.

Zika virus may spread from the mother to the foetus th defects, paralysis at time of birth and other complications. It may risk neurological issues for pregnant women and the foetus

Symptoms of Zika Virus

Sometimes people can be asymptomatic and show no symptoms of the infection, While for some, it can be very mild as well.

  • Muscle Ache

Currently, there are no vaccines for zika virus and the the treatment is done on basis of the symptoms.

Zika Virus Prevention Tips For Pregnant Women

  1. Increase Fluid Intake: Staying hydrated is the golden rule to steer clear of several health-related issues in general. Keep the body high on fluids, drink coconut water as it will also help to balance electrolyte count. fluids also help to get rid of toxins and detoxify the body.
  2. Wear Full-Length Clothing and Repellants: This is often considered as one of the best bets to avoid mosquito bites. Hence, before stepping out try to keep yourself covered, especially in the rainy season to avoid Aedes mosquito infection and other viruses too.  Mosquito repellants should also be applied for extra precautions.
  3. Have a Balanced Meal: Having whole fruits is important. Seasonal fruits especially have added benefits. To increase platelets one should have fruits rich in nutrients, vitamin C, Vitamin A, antioxidants, and fibre.
  4. Take Ample of Rest: It is important to keep the body fit and healthy. After a hectic day of work or school, allow kids to take proper rest and let body rejuvenate and recover.
  5. Maintain Proper Hygiene: Keep the inner surroundings clean. Avoid stagnation of the water body near by as it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitos.
