How to switch out your summer bedding for warmer winter options in the most environmentally savvy way

Australian homes were generally not built for cold weather climates because more often than not we’re all sweating through the soaring mercury in an endless summer.

So it’s down to the home’s occupants to deck out the interior with heaters, invest in a good quality dressing gown and plenty of warming mugs of tea.

But when it comes to getting into bed each night it pays to purchase a thicker duvet and even a throw to put on over the top so you’re keeping cosy — and fashion focused — over the next few months.

When it comes to bedding and towelling I’ve always opted for Sheridan products because they’re built to last — you’ll never be disappointed by loose threads and thin fabric.

For winter I decided to up the ante with Sheridan’s 1000tc Hotel Luxury Fitted Sheet, which is currently on offer as part of a buy two products and save 30 per cent promotion, and the 1200tc Palais Quilt Cover which look and feel like you’re sleeping at the Shangri La Hotel.

They’re not overwhelming by design but I did notice they were slightly thicker, cocooning me into a deeper sleep.

Pair these with the 1000tc Hotel Luxury Pillowcase Pair in Snow and Reilly Pillowcase Pair in Chambray to rest your head on at night.

And as a final flourish you can’t go past the Reilly Bed Cover in Chambray for extra warmth.

I’d normally shy away from tumble drying a throw like this but it actually only enhances the casual appearance of it, so don’t be afraid. It’s not actually high maintenance.

If you’re still wanting to re-style your bedding for winter Sheridan has actually just started a partnership with BlockTexx, a global industry leader in textile resource recovery to help consumers play their part in reducing textile waste.

With the average household having up to 15 kilos of old, worn linen at the end of its life, Sheridan is the first Australian homewares brand to offer a recycling program to local communities across Australia — providing a solution for consumers to consciously dispose of their pre-loved bed linen and towels.

All you have to do is bring in your pre-loved linens — from any brand — to a Sheridan boutique or outlet store and the items will be collected by Blocktexx and converted back into their raw materials for further use.

Environmental advocate Lottie Dalziel is a huge campaigner for sustainability and has a couple of other suggestions for how you might recycle your old textiles.

“You can turn flanellette sheets into hot water bottle covers, use printed pillowcases to wrap gifts for friends and cut unwanted towels into round discs to make your own reusable makeup wipes,” she told Best Picks.

“As the temperature drops it’s a great time to have a look at your winter woolies and see if they’re still up to scratch.

“For me I pull everything out and do a stocktake. Does every set have the matching pillowcases, is everything in good condition? I pop a few things aside and take the time to give them some TLC.

“Removing stains, sewing on buttons and giving everything a good wash. For the items that are holey and no longer fit for use I take them to my local Sheridan boutique to be recyled with BlockTexx.”
