Hundreds of Australians barred from entering Bali after arriving without the correct visa

Arriving in a foreign country without a visa seems like an obvious mistake, but it’s the main reason tourists were preventing from entering Bali during the first quarter of 2024.

During this period, 561 foreign nationals were denied entry to the Indonesian territory, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office in Badung told local media.

“The most common reason for rejection is because they don’t have a visa,” Ngurah Rai head of immigration Suhendra said.

Of those 561 people, 243 foreigners did not have a visa.

The next largest group were those on the criminal list, totalling 212 people, followed by 52 people with a passport validity period of less than six months, 28 people on the banned list and 20 people detected for Interpol pursuit.

The government deported 66 people and detained or temporarily detained 89 people.

Of those deported, 23 people were from the United States, while 10 were Australian, seven were Iranian, seven were Tanzanian and six were Indian.

The majority of cases were due to exceeding the residence permit or overstaying, while another significant portion of cases were due to not complying with the laws and regulations in the country.

During the documented period, 2.9 million foreigners travelled through the immigration checkpoint at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, up 24 per cent on the same period in 2023.

Australians were the largest group of tourists, following by travellers from India, China, England, South Korea, the United States, Malaysia, France, Singapore and Germany.
