Hyundai and Kia Recall Over 100,000 Vehicles Due to Fire Risk: Owners Advised to Park Cars Outside Residences

Hyundai Motor and Kia are together recalling over 1.13 lakh vehicles in North America because of a fire risk, as per a report by Reuters. The Korean manufacturers have urged vehicles owners to park the affected vehicles outside their homes and away from structures pending repairs.

The vehicles that have been affected include 2023-2024 Hyundai Palisade, 2023 Hyundai Tucson, 2023 Hyundai Sonata, 2023 Hyundai Elantra, and 2023 Hyundai Kona, along with 2023-2024 Kia Seltos, 2023 Kia Soul, and 2023 Kia Sportage.

About 52,000 Hyundai and 40,000 Kia cars are covered under the recall in the United States, along with an additional 11,000 Hyundai vehicles and 10,700 Kia vehicles in Canada.
It has been revealed that the electronic controllers for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components that can cause the pump to overheat. Affected vehicle owners will be notified in late September and dealers will inspect and replace the faulty electric oil pump controller if required.

Kia has so far reported six incidents of potentially related thermal events but no accidents or injuries have been reported, while Hyundai has four similar reports. The Korean automakers are said to have told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) a suspect part was eliminated from production in March 2023.
Hyundai has told its dealers that a rental vehicle should be provided to potential affected customers who do not feel safe operating their vehicle until a recall fix is available. The company said that if owners report a burning/melting odor, they should not attempt to drive it, and have the vehicle towed to the nearest Hyundai dealership.
