Days after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, Republicans arrived to Milwaukee to renominate him for president—and, by all accounts, to toast to their odds for November. The party atmosphere pervaded the event, even as largely placid protestors gathered outside the compound and darker messages took hold in each evening’s speeches. Below, some background scenes from my days roaming the Republican National Convention.

MAGA rapper “Forgiato Blow” (Kurt Jantz), before debuting a new music video featuring Amber Rose at the RNC. He wore a shirt with the photograph taken of Trump seconds after he survived an assassination attempt. Aymann Ismail
Gerald Maze, who was not involved in the proceedings, came to the RNC from Kansas to take in the energy. He showed off his off-brand Trump shoes, which his daughter bought for him from Amazon. Aymann Ismail
Protesters were never far away. “40,000-plus are dead in Gaza, and Democrats are sending thoughts and prayers to Donald Trump for getting clipped in the ear. It’s ridiculous,” said Jay, who came to town from Minneapolis to protest the RNC. Aymann Ismail
Vivek Ramaswamy, an unlikely rock star at the convention, greeted Maggie Confalone, a delegate from North Carolina, and signed her jacket. She told me she intends on donating it to her local Republican Party for auction. Aymann Ismail
Former North Carolina Congressman Madison Cawthorn, another ubiquitous presence for whatever reason, enjoyed touring the RNC grounds with a passenger on his lap. Aymann Ismail

A (male) New Jersey delegate wears a Women for Trump T-shirt, the only I can recall seeing at the RNC. Aymann Ismail
Alan Spitz, an Illinois delegate, told me Israel is not the most important issue for him this election. Yet this was his sticker, right next to a Nixon pin. Aymann Ismail
