“Berries contain my favourite thing, antioxidants,” he explained in the video.
“Now think of antioxidants like your body’s little repair men.”
“They help fix damage done by unstable molecules called free radicals. [When these are] in high numbers [they] can damage our cells and cause inflammation.”
When it comes to what berries you should go for, Doctor Khan explained that blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are thought to have the “highest antioxidant levels”.
“They may help improve blood sugars by improving your insulin sensitivity, both laboratory and human studies have shown berries can improve our insulin response to high carb meals. Thus, helping keep blood sugars at healthy levels,” said the doctor.
Doctor Khan also explained that it’s thought that a lot of people in the Western world do not get enough fibre in their diet.
However, berries contain fibre which is good for gut health and helps to keep people fuller for longer.
“Berries are also thought to be heart healthy which may help lower cholesterol levels. Initial studies show that berries can lower our LDL cholesterol which is considered to be harmful cholesterol,” he said.
Alongside their other benefits, Doctor Khan detailed how berries keep certain cells healthy.
“The inside of our blood vessels aligned with something called endothelial cells which have lots of important functions like controlling our blood pressure and helping with blood clotting,” he said.
“But those cells can become damaged through things like smoking which can stop them from doing their job as well.”
He added: “This is known as endothelial dysfunction, but berries are thought to improve the function of our endothelial cells when eaten regularly”.
Lastly, the doctor said a big bonus for berries is not only are they incredible for our health, but they also happen to be “absolutely delicious.”
The doctor’s video garnered more than 900,000 views and people in the comments praised his advice.
“You are so amazing at explaining this. Thanks for this,” said one.
“I love them, but they are expensive, but I am willing to pay,” added another.
“I love the way you explain everything so clearly, and with such enthusiasm,” said a third.
