Actor Imran Khan, who has been away from the silver screen since his last released film ‘Katti Batti’ (2015), has been engaging with his fans on social media.
In a recent interview with Film Companion, Imran opened up about how a mental health scare made him reevaluate his life, and convinced him that stepping away from films would be the best thing to do.
Imran shared that it was between 2016 and 2017 when he began to prioritize his mental health. He acknowledged that he came to the realization that “being an actor is optional, but these things are not optional” as he shifted his focus towards his well-being.
Imran mentioned that during the week before “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na” was released, nobody cared if he walked on the street, but the week after its release, people started chasing his car. He also noted that if a film doesn’t perform well, the same industry individuals who were eager to praise him suddenly change their tune, saying things like, “You are out of season, you are the wrong kind of flavour.”
The actor shared that when he stepped away, he missed the movies but he was primarily spending his time nursing himself back to health. Imran recounted that during those years, he lacked the capability to perform basic tasks due to deep and severe depression. He mentioned that even attending his regular therapy appointments was challenging.
Imran expressed that he never attempted to hold onto the fame he had; instead, he made efforts to withdraw. He stated, “I did my best to disappear. I did not engage via those threads.” He highlighted his decision to avoid clinging to the spotlight, contrasting it with the typical methods of staying relevant. He reflected, “I did exactly the opposite of what you are supposed to do to stay relevant. Yet here we are, and here I am.”
