Make room for more emotions and box office records as Disney and Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2‘ has officially entered the record books as the first film of 2024 to reach the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
In just 19 days since its release, the animated sequel has grossed $469.3 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $1.015 billion.
Crossing this huge milestone places ‘Inside Out 2′ among only 11 animated films to have ever crossed the billion-dollar threshold, eight of which are Disney titles. Moreover, it is the fastest animated film to achieve this feat.’Inside Out 2’ debuted in theatres on June 14, exceeding expectations with a $151 million domestic opening, surpassing ‘Dune: Part 2’ for the biggest opening of the year.
It became the first film since director Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ starring and Margot Robbie, to open above $100 million. ‘Barbie’ boasted of a $162 million opening. The sequel has maintained its top position at the box office for three consecutive weekends, becoming the highest-grossing film both domestically and globally in 2024.
Earlier this week, it surpassed the lifetime gross of its predecessor, 2015’s ‘Inside Out’, which earned $859 million worldwide.

This success marks a significant triumph for Pixar, which has faced challenges at the box office in recent years as Disney opted to release films like ‘Turning Red’, ‘Soul’, and ‘Luca’ directly to Disney+ during the pandemic.
‘Inside Out 2’ has benefited from the returning fanbase of the original 2015 film and good word-of-mouth that allegedly helped boost collections.
Directed by Kelsey Mann, ‘Inside Out 2’ again takes place largely inside the mind of a girl named Riley, as she grapples with new feelings on starting high school. Emotions such as Embarrassment, Envy and Anxiety join the existing, talkative residents of her teen head, including Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. The voice cast for the animated film includes Maya Hawke (Anxiety), Ayo Edebiri (Envy), Paul Walter Hauser (Embarrassment), and June Squibb (Nostalgia) as she heads to hockey camp over the summer.
The film also sees the return of Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, and Lewis Black as Anger, who appeared in the original film.
