A fitness coach has made a surprising discovery after he compared butcher and supermarket beef mince to determine which offered the best bang for your buck.
Matt West purchased 500g of “premium” grass fed beef mince from Woolworths for $11 and then bought the same amount at a local butcher for just $8.50.

Despite the $2.50 price difference, Matt noticed the mince changed drastically during cooking.
“I thought I’d try to bust the myth — is it best to buy your meat from the supermarket or the butcher?” he said in his now-viral video on Instagram.
“I wanted to test the quality between supermarket and butcher… You are not going to believe what I discovered.”
When he cooked up the first batch from Woolworths, he was stunned with the amount of liquid that seeped out of the mince.
“I was surprised how much water came out,” Matt explained.
He then weighed the cooked mince from the supermarket, which came in at 371g.
It was then time to cook up the butcher’s mince using the same pan.
“The big thing I noticed was there was way less water (with butcher’s mince), I couldn’t believe the difference in between the two,” Matt said.
“They were both premium mince, both grass-fed, so technically on the same playing field.”
Much to his surprise, the cooked mince from the butcher weighed 417g.
“You get 46 more grams with the butcher mince, than you do with the supermarket mince,” he said.
“So in my opinion, get down to the butcher, you’re going to save money, get more beef for your buck and you can support a local business.”
His video received more than 1.3 million views — with many loving Matt’s comparison.
“Nice video mate, support local and get more protein and less water while you’re at it,” said one.
“Fabulous content,” added a second.
“You’ve literally single-handedly convinced me to use my local butcher, thanks,” said a third.
“This is so interesting, thanks for sharing,” added another.
