Japan’s TDK to manufacture iPhone battery cells in India, create thousands of jobs

Japanese electronic parts maker TDK Corp will manufacture lithium ion (li-ion) battery cells for Apple iPhones in India. IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar shared a Business Standard report announcing the same in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The facility to create up to 10,000 jobs in India
Apple has been looking at India as its next big growth driver as it looks to move some production away from China. According to the report, the cells will be supplied to Sunwoda Electronics, which is operating in India and imports cells from various markets in the world. The contract with Apple Inc could generate 8,000-10,000 jobs in India.
Apple started assembling iPhones in India in 2017 through Wistron and later Foxconn, and has a total of 14 suppliers in India. First-generation Apple iPhone SE was the first phone to be assembled in India. Apple iPhone 6 was the first flagship iPhone to be made in India. Since then some model of almost every iPhone series have been made in India.
The latest-generation iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus too are made in India. Reports suggest that Apple may start assembling of some models of iPhone 17 series too in India from second half of 2023.
