“Jarhead” Author Anthony Swofford Slams Sen. Tommy Tuberville for Blocking Military Promotions
Anthony Swofford, the author of “Jarhead” and a former marine who served in the first Gulf War, criticized Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) for impeding the advancement of military promotions in the Senate. Tuberville’s objection stems from the Pentagon’s policy of providing paid leave and travel expenses to service members who undergo an abortion in another state. As a result, the Marine Corps is currently without a leader.
Speaking on MSNBC’s Joy Reid show, Swofford expressed his astonishment at Tuberville’s stance, emphasizing the importance of having a recognized and respected leader for the marines on the ground. He called Tuberville’s obstruction of nominations based on “body autonomy for women who serve in the military” ridiculous and even disgusting.
Veterans group Vote Vets also condemned Tuberville’s actions and released an online video expressing their disapproval. The video criticizes Tuberville for holding military assignments hostage to pursue his social agenda, referring to it as a “MAGA social agenda.” Additionally, Tuberville’s controversial remarks suggesting that white nationalists should be allowed to serve in the military were highlighted, noting that he is playing political games with national security.
