TORONTO – Jose Bautista has officially retired as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays after signing a one-day contract with the team. Bautista and Blue Jays team president Mark Shapiro held a news conference at Rogers Centre, where they acknowledged that Bautista’s retirement with the team was long overdue but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bautista will be honored in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday, and his family and former teammates are expected to attend. Bautista started his MLB career in 2004 and played for several teams before joining the Blue Jays in 2008. He thrived in Toronto and was selected to six consecutive all-star teams, earning multiple awards and setting memorable moments in Blue Jays history, such as his famous bat flip in the 2015 American League Division Series. Bautista last played in 2018 and won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the Dominican Republic team.
