NEW YORK (AP) — Multiple news organizations, writers, and photographers groups are advocating for their involvement in establishing standards for the use of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly concerning intellectual property rights and the potential dissemination of misinformation.
In a recent open letter, they have outlined their priorities for establishing rules on this rapidly advancing technology, as regulators struggle to keep up.
“We… support the responsible advancement and implementation of generative AI technology, while recognizing the need for a legal framework to safeguard the content that empowers AI applications and to uphold public trust in the media,” the organizations stated.
The letter was signed by The Associated Press, Gannett, the News Media Alliance (representing numerous publishers), Getty Images, the National Press Photographers Association, Agence France-Presse, and others.
These organizations seek to ensure that intellectual property owners retain their rights when AI operators use their material for training purposes. Last month, the AP reached an agreement with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI to license the news agency’s archive of news stories.
The letter also calls on AI companies to take specific measures to eradicate bias and misinformation in the content it generates. Photographers, in particular, have concerns about AI’s potential to create false images.
In July, seven leading AI developers in the US voluntarily agreed to abide by safeguards outlined by President Joe Biden’s administration for the development of their technology. However, these commitments are not legally binding and do not address intellectual property concerns.
