Sexed-up workwear has been in heavy rotation lately, and nobody is doing it with more aplomb than Kristen Stewart.
The star, who is promoting her queer thriller Love Lies Bleeding, wore a riff on a three-piece suit while out in New York City. She opted for a cropped gray vest, left entirely unbuttoned (and sans bra), high-waisted trousers with white contrast stitching, and a matching overcoat. Adding to the open vest, Stewart and her stylist, Tara Swennen, further subverted the outfit with punky jewelry: a silver chainlink necklace and a fistful of silver rings. Additional accessories included black wayfarers and a quilted patent leather Chanel purse that matched her tasseled, patent leather loafers.
Suiting has been a recurrent look in queer women’s wardrobes for a century, from Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn nearly 100 years ago, to Boygenius and nearly every Cate Blanchett character today. Stewart has been a proponent of the look, and has recently enjoyed playing with suiting and menswear conventions. At the premiere of Love Lies Bleeding last week, she wore a high-cut bodysuit from Bettter, a brand that repurposes men’s old suits for womenswear.
But sexy workwear has recently been having a moment in the zeitgeist. From the TikTok “Office Siren” trend to the low-cut and cropped takes on normally office-friendly pieces that celebrities wore at Miu Miu, Loewe, and Dior’s fall 2024 show earlier this month. Whether sexy workwear is another fleeting trend or a viable movement, it’s safe to say that nobody’s doing it as effortlessly as Kristen Stewart.
