Lamborghini Urus SE: Most powerful Urus explained by Rouven Mohr

Automobili Lamborghini has unveiled the Urus SE, the plug-in hybrid iteration of the SUV. The super SUV broke cover ahead of its public debut at Auto China Beijing 2024 on April 25. This will be the second hybrid car in the company’s global portfolio.
Urus SE: Design

Furthermore, new under-body air vents and revamped air ducts have now enhanced the aerodynamic efficiency, increasing airflow to cool mechanical and engine components by 15 percent compared to the standard Urus.
It features new 23-inch alloy wheels wrapped paired with new Pirelli P Zero tyres as standard. Additionally, the SUV will be offered in over 100 colour options, including two new colours: Arancio Egon (orange) with Arancio Apodis (orange) interior, and Bianco Sapphirus (white) with Terra Kedros (terracotta) interior.

Urus SE: Powertrain

Powering the Urus SE is a hybrid powertrain combining a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine with an electric motor, resulting in a total output of 788 hp and 950 Nm of torque. With a 25.9-kWh lithium-ion battery situated below the load floor, the Urus SE can travel over 60 km in electric mode. The hybrid powertrain introduces four new Electric Performance Strategies (EPS), adding to the existing six Urus driving modes, resulting in a total of eleven options. Alongside the familiar Strada, Sport, and Corsa modes for various road conditions, the Neve, Sabbia, and Terra modes for off-road surfaces, the new EPS includes EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge options.

We wanted to be number 1 in the power output department hence the hybrid route for Urus: Rouven Mohr, CTO, Lamborghini

We recently spoke to Rouven Mohr, the CTO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A to understand more about the company’s strategy regarding the Urus SE. Here are the edited excerpts.
“First of all, it is for sure about the power output because we decided to go in the plugin direction as we wanted to take the number one position in terms of power output,”
“The Urus SE makes a huge step, It makes the biggest step in the evolution of Urus so far and it is even more comfortable than the current Urus S” he added.
On being asked what measures were taken to offset the increased weight from the hybrid powertrain, he explained “We did a lot of things to compensate for the additional weight, for instance, we saved 20 kgs on the rear differentials. Also, multiple small modifications were made to achieve our target. We have the lightest hybrid version of the competition. So for sure, we did subtract based on our light-weight technology.
“Also, we did a lot of improvements on the outside, or three layers, because we have more power output for sure, so we needed a little bit more cooling power. We improved the cooling performance by 50%. We also improved the brake cooling by 30% based on the new flow of the airflow from the underbody to the brake callipers” he explained about other changes that the Urus SE underwent.
The company debuted the Revuelto V12 hybrid last year, marking its transition towards an electric brand. For now, the manufacturer will focus on hybrid tech with the debut of Urus SE and the hybrid Huracan successor slated for later this year. “Every hybrid is a performance hybrid. At the end of the decade, for sure – we’ll start with our full electric range.” Mohr noted.
