RAIPUR: Laxmi Rajwade has become the youngest and the only woman who will be serving as a minister in the Chhattisgarh government.
Her inclusion, at the age of 31, in the Chhattisgarh Cabinet led by CM Vishnu Deo Sai has caught many off guard, especially after earlier speculation about the potential elevation of senior women leaders in the new BJP government.
Rajwade is poised to play a crucial role in fulfilling one of the BJP manifesto’s significant promises, including the Mahtari Vandan Yojana, aiming to provide Rs 12,000 annually to married women in the state.
Embracing the responsibility, Rajwade expressed her understanding of women’s needs and stated, “Being a woman, I understand the needs and problems of women better, and I will try my best to work for women’s welfare in the state as a minister. My priority will be to fulfil Modi ji’s guarantee and bring the Mahtari Vandan Yojana to reality. I will function on the directions of seniors and work towards empowering women under a proper policy.”
Recounting the joyous moment she received a phone call from the chief minister on Friday night, Rajwade highlighted that her induction as a minister is a milestone in her political journey.
Announced as a candidate two and a half months before the elections, Rajwade capitalised on the time to engage in extensive electioneering in her constituency. Focusing on the issue of developmental stagnation under the Congress government, she conducted door-to-door campaigns and reached out to remote areas alongside her husband and team members. The first-time MLA secured victory by defeating sitting Congress legislator Parasnath Rajwade with a substantial margin of 43,000 votes from the Bhatgaon constituency in North Chhattisgarh.
Having started her political career in 2011 as a treasurer in the party mandal, Rajwade’s ascent included roles such as janpad member from the village Birpur in Surajpur district and subsequently serving as a zila panchayat member. With her recent promotion, she attributes her success to her husband Thakur Ram Rajwade and the support of the party leadership.
Owning a poultry farm and brick kiln in Surajpur, Laxmi Rajwade’s husband formerly served as a panchayat secretary, and as per records, she possesses property worth Rs 1.41 crore.
Despite earlier speculations involving union minister of state Renuka Singh and Member of Parliament Gomati Sai, luck favored Laxmi Rajwade in securing her place in the cabinet.
