Leah Remini, an actor and former Scientologist, is suing the Church of Scientology and its leader, David Miscavige, for alleged harassment, stalking, defamation, and other illegal activities. Remini aims to put an end to the church’s alleged “harassment, defamation, and other unlawful conduct” against individuals labeled as enemies by Scientology. So far, the Church of Scientology and Miscavige have not publicly commented on the lawsuit. Remini, who joined the church as a child and left in 2013, is seeking compensatory and punitive damages for the harm inflicted upon her and her career. She claims to have experienced psychological torture, defamation, surveillance, harassment, and intimidation for 17 years, orchestrated by Scientology and Miscavige. Remini also alleges that her family, friends, business partners, and associates were targeted by the church for associating with her. She states that she wants to exercise her constitutional rights to speak the truth and report on Scientology. Remini emphasizes that she is not the only target of the church, but one of many individuals who have been harassed by the organization over the past seven decades. Mike Rinder, a former senior executive of the Church of Scientology, expressed support for Remini and her lawsuit, highlighting the bravery required to stand up against Scientology’s hate and harassment. Remini has been an outspoken critic of the church and Miscavige’s abuse of power since leaving Scientology. She produced and co-created the documentary series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” which shed light on the organization’s alleged abuses. In court, Remini testified against the church, claiming they planted false rape allegations against film director Paul Haggis. She was also present during the trial of actor Danny Masterson, another Scientologist, where she accused the church and Miscavige of attempting to remove her from the courtroom to waste time and discredit her as a supporter of sexual violence survivors. Masterson was eventually found guilty of rape.
