Australian actor Luke Cook, known for his roles in popular streaming shows like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Katy Keene, has opened up about his low pay in the industry. Despite appearing in successful series, Cook still has to work two jobs to make ends meet. He emphasized that the majority of actors in the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) struggle to make a living solely from acting and rely on side hustles. Cook’s comments come as about 160,000 Hollywood actors officially go on strike, demanding increased pay from the biggest studios. A-list actors such as Matt Damon, Margot Robbie, and Meryl Streep have supported the strike, although their own salaries are unlikely to be impacted. Cook clarified that the strike is about fair pay for actors like himself, who are not series regulars or top-tier stars. He explained that actors in these roles are paid significantly less, sharing his own experience of being paid $7,500 for two weeks of work, which is further reduced after taxes and agent fees. Cook and other actors participating in the strike argue that they should receive a larger portion of the profits generated by the streaming platforms and production companies. SAG-AFTRA’s president, Fran Drescher, also highlighted that the majority of actors are working people trying to make a living. As the strike continues, actors are demanding a reevaluation of residuals and fair compensation for their work, particularly as the industry shifts towards streaming platforms where residual payment calculations are more uncertain.
