Vinod Agarwal, the richest man in Madhya Pradesh, overcame numerous challenges to achieve his remarkable success. Despite being born into a poor family during the tumultuous time of India’s Partition in 1947, Vinod displayed tenacity from a young age. Determined to improve his family’s quality of life, he took on odd jobs and founded Agarwal Coal, a company that would later become one of the largest coal importers in India.

India was recovering from the aftermath of Partition, and Vinod’s family had lost everything. Financial struggles were a constant presence in his childhood, but this only fueled his determination to succeed.
Building a Coal Empire
Driven by his desire to support his family, Vinod started working at a young age and founded Agarwal Coal. Today, the company is valued at Rs 6,000 Crore and is known as one of India’s top coal importers. They source coal from various mines around the world, including Indonesia, South Africa, the United States, and Australia. Agarwal Coal also imports coal domestically from within India.
A Diverse Clientele
Agarwal Coal’s clients primarily consist of private sector giants such as Aditya Birla Group, Tata Group, IPP, and major captive power plants. They also cater to the boiler industry, fulfilling orders ranging from 500 metric tons to 500,000 metric tons. The company prides itself on being a “solutions provider” that customizes its services to meet the specific needs of each client.
Other Successful Individuals
Alongside Vinod Agarwal, there are several other prominent individuals from Madhya Pradesh who have achieved great success. Sunil Chouradia, the MD of Rajratan Global Wire, is ranked 389th on the list of top earners. EKI Energy Services, a unicorn company from Indore, makes its debut on the list, with Manish Dabkara, the director, ranking 459th. Dilip Suryavanshi and Devendra Jain of Dilip Buildcon Company also make the list, ranking 681st and 950th respectively.
