Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Animal‘, which hit theaters last December, became a huge hit despite its mixed reviews. Now, Mahesh Bhatt, the seasoned filmmaker and Ranbir’s father-in-law, has weighed in on the critique. He suggested that artists have no choice but to navigate the harsh world of criticism, showing resilience in the face of it.
Bhatt explained that entertainment is like a fierce competition where people either cheer for your downfall or celebrate your success.He acknowledged that facing criticism and praise is simply part of the entertainment world.
He added that choosing a life in entertainment means accepting the role of a performer rather than a mere spectator. He believed the world belongs to creators who have the courage to perform, not to those who just criticize from the sidelines.He elaborated that these challenges are part of the job, akin to getting sunburned when standing in the sun. You can’t expect to avoid the downsides while enjoying the perks of the spotlight.
In the entertainment landscape, projects often sparked conversations on various issues, from gender parity to self-discovery, but sometimes got caught in a whirlwind and ended up facing criticism.

With a career spanning over 50 films, Mahesh believes this has always been the reality of the industry. Artists must learn to navigate it, as the harshness of the times cannot be avoided. “These are the realities we face,” he says. “You and your art must endure within these constraints.”
Though Mahesh took a step back from directing after Sadak 2, he remains deeply engaged in the industry. He recently returned as the writer for the thriller horror Bloody Ishq, featuring Vardhaan Puri and Avika Gor. Additionally, he played a creative role in the social drama Ab Dilli Dur Nahin, which follows the journey of a rickshaw puller’s son becoming an IAS officer.

Mahesh views the film as a powerful narrative about daring to dream, highlighting that such aspirations are not limited to the privileged or urban society. He explains that the film is adapted from a play he previously worked on, showcasing the profound experience of pursuing big dreams.
He found the experience deeply moving and praised the director, Kamal Chandra, for his debut effort in film. Mahesh commends Chandra for effectively bringing the story of a dream’s evolution into reality, and believes his work will inspire people across the country.
