Mahindra Thar.E: Mahindra Thar.e: Five things that will set it apart from petrol Thar 4×4

Mahindra recently revealed the concept model of the all-electric Thar.e, which will take the Thar 4×4’s legacy forward in the near future. While the announcement has created a lot of excitement among Mahindra SUV enthusiasts, building an electric off-roader has both its pros and cons. While the automaker has not revealed much technical details related to the Thar.e, here are five fundamental differences that you can expect between a traditional petrol Thar and an all-electric version of the off-roader.

1

1. All-new platform and design:
The Thar.e will be based on Mahindra’s all-new EV platform called the INGLO P1, which has been modified to integrate the off-roader’s silhouette. It has a skateboard architecture with the battery placed between the front and rear axles. Having the mass of its weight concentrated on its lower half, the electric Thar would presumably have a better centre of gravity. This could also make it handle better than the existing Thar 4×4.
2. More capable off-road performance:
The fact that an electric car inherently has an instant torque output, this would work well in off-road situations where the lack of any lag in output, could help tread over tricky terrains more easily.

3. Heavier than petrol Thar:
While the battery pack, would give the Thar.3 better stability. It would also make it much heavier than the petrol Thar. Moreover, the Thar.e’s common powertrain would power both the front and rear wheels for it to have 4×4 capability. This would further increase its weight and that could be tricky in muddy situations.
4. Futuristic interior:
Mahindra did reveal that the electric Thar.e would get an all-new interior. Based on the announcement, the interior of the electric off-roader would be minimal yet futuristic. It would feature a high mounted centre console and a rotatable infotainment touchscreen. The steering wheel, door panels and other inserts can also be expected to be all-new and next-generation.

5. Vehicle-to-load charging:
Being an electric off-roader meant for adventure seeking, the Thar.e can be expected to come with Vehicle-to-load charging function. This is a common function among high-end EVs, that lets the user charge or power small appliances using the vehicle’s battery pack.

While these are practical standpoints on how going electric will affect the Thar 4×4 as we know it, the automaker did confirm some key details during the announcements. The Thar.e will get a longer wheelbase of between 2,775 mm to 2,975 mm. The ground clearance would be between 250 mm to 300 mm and it would get shorter overhangs.
