Maine is set to expand abortion access, becoming one of the least restrictive states in the country. Governor Janet Mills signed a bill into law that allows abortions at any time if deemed medically necessary by a doctor, removing previous restrictions on timing. The law will go into effect 90 days after the state Legislature’s work concludes. The decision came after a Maine veterinarian, Dana Peirce, had to travel to Colorado for an abortion when she learned of her unborn son’s fatal condition at 32 weeks of pregnancy. Passage of the bill was expected with Democrats controlling both chambers of the Legislature. Critics argue that the law’s broad language could lead to an increase in post-viability abortions and places too much trust in doctors. However, Democratic-controlled states have taken steps to protect abortion access, with Maine joining six other states and Washington, D.C. in allowing abortions without restrictions.
